Do you like shopping? Or does the thought of wandering around theshops fill you with terror?

For some of us, shopping is an enjoyable way of spending our sparetime and our money. For me, it’s something I would rather avoid. Thank goodnessfor the Internet! It’s more convenient to buy CDs, electrical items, even foodfrom the comfort of your sofa. But that’s not the only reason: price is animportant factor. We can buy goods and services cheaper online. But sometimesthe problem is not knowing what to buy. This has led to a type of shoppingcalled “showrooming”.

Showrooming is something I’ve done. I will go to a shop to see, touch and try out products but then go home and buy them online at a knock-downprice. I’m not alone in doing this. Research by a company called Foolproof, found 24% of people showroomed while Christmas shopping in 2013.

Amy Cashman, head of Technology at TNS UK, says the reasons for thisnew shopping habit are that “people are lacking time, lacking money and theywant security about the products they are buying”. She explains that consumersare not only shopping online at home but they are using the Internet in storeor on their smartphones to shop around. But does this mean technology will killshops? Certainly shops will change. They will have to offer more competitiveprices or encourage people to buy more by giving in-store discounts or freegifts.

We mustn’t forget that buying in a shop means you can get expertadvice from the sales assistant and you can get good aftercare. It’s good tospeak to a real human rather than look at a faceless computer screen, but atleast by showrooming, you get the best of both worlds!

21. The twoquestions in Paragraph 1 are raised to ___________.

A.introduce the topic                B. give twoexamples

C.compare different opinions              D. getanswers from readers

22. According toAmy Cashman, which is not the reason for showrooming?

A.The lack of time.                      B. The comfort of the sofa.

C.The shortness ofmoney.                         D.The security of the product.

23. The author’sattitude towards showrooming is ___________.

   A.critical                B. neutral         C.casual         D. supportive

There is a very instructive incident involving the life of Alexanderthe Great, King of Greek. Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, wasreturning home. We always convince ourselves that life will be better after we getmarried, have a baby… Then we are frustrated that the kids aren’t old enoughand we’ll be more content when they are. After that we’re frustrated that wehave teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out ofthat stage.

We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when ourspouse (配偶) getshis or her act together; when we get a nice car, and are able to go on a nicevocation; when we retire. The truth is, there’s no better time than right now.If not now, when? Our life will always be filled with challenges. It’s best toadmit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway.

One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred Souza. He said, “For along time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin real life. But there wasalways some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, someunfinished business, time still to be served, and a debt to be paid. Then lifewould begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.” Thisperspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happinessis the way. So treasure every moment that you have.

And remember that time waits for no one. So stop waiting until youfinish school, until you go back to school; until you get married; until youget divorced; until you have kids; until you retire; until you get a new car orhome; until spring; until you are born again to decide that there is no bettertime than right now to be happy….

Happiness is a journey, not a destination. So, work like you don’tneed money, love like you’ve never been hurt, and dance like no one’s watching.

32. In the thirdparagraph, the author uses Alfred Souza’s quote in order to ___________.

A. support his viewpoint

B. introduce one more topic

C. enrich the content of the article

D. compare their different views on happiness

33. Theunderlined word “this” in the second paragraph probably refers to ___________.

A. Life will be better after we get married and have a baby.

B. Our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her acttogether.

C. When we retire, we are able to go on a nice holiday.

D. Our life is always filled with challenges.

34. The besttitle of the text might be___________.

A. Owning the Present is Owning the Future

B. Pursuing Happiness is Nature of Us Humans

C. Happiness is a Journey

D. How to Possess Real Happiness

35. The mainidea of the second paragraph is that___________.

A. Only when we get whatever we want can we feel our life iscomplete

B. Whatever happens in our life, we should live at present

C. We can always wait to enjoy happiness in the future

D. We cannot enjoy happiness now because we are facing many challenges

第二节 书面表达

Low – carbon Living

Recently, my classmates and I participated in the activity of Low –Carbon Living organized by the WWF. On the first day, we chose to go to school by bike or on foot rather than by bus orcar. Before we left the classroom, we made sure the lights and the computerwere switched off. In order to make full use of paper, we began to write onboth sides. Besides, while shopping, we no longer used plastic bags but carriedenvironmentally friendly ones.

I think what we did on that day was meaningful, which helps us toform a good habit. We should also call on the people around us to do somethingfor low – carbon living. Only in this way will the earth he a good place tolive on.
